Mohonk Preserve will use the $25,000 from the North Face Explore Fund to pilot a new outdoor education program for urban, at-risk, minority youth from the City of Newburgh, New York. These students — who are taught at a very early age to stay inside because the streets are not safe — will be brought to the beautiful Shawangunk Mountains, where they will learn about mountain habitats and wildlife, and undertake fun physical challenges such as hiking, snow shoeing, and rock scrambles. Grant funds from North Face will cover the costs of bussing the students to the Preserve, and the purchase of program equipment and supplies — including binoculars, clinometers, snowshoes, and an all-terrain wheelchair — which will allow students with physical disabilities to participate in the programs.
