For the deepest powder days, you can’t go wrong with the Volkl Three.
And the conditions the day I tested the Ski were ideal; over a foot of classic blower Utah pow. From the first run, I was surprised by how nimble the ski felt for being so wide underfoot, and even in tight trees they felt manageable and responsive. As expected, the 3 floated incredibly well in the untouched snow, and the full rocker shape gave the ski the fun surfy feel I look for in a powder specific ski.
Volkl designed the sidecut and flex of the ski to match up with the full rocker profile. That allows the ski to be loose and drifty in the soft stuff, but the more you put the ski on edge, the more effective the edge becomes. So even in the chop and crud we had later in the day, the ski still performed well.
Despite the super fat tips and tapered tail, the swing weight still felt balanced, which is something you don’t always find in a big powder ski. And the huge tips have a stompy feel that makes it easier to land airs and drops with a more aggressive, forward stance.
The Volkl 3 is 150mm in the tips, 135 underfoot, and 140 in tail. They feature the ELP full rocker profile shape, a multi-layer wood core, and Volkl’s power tough box construction.
If you’re looking for a one ski quiver the 3 probably isn’t going to be your best bet. But if you’re looking for a powder specific ski to reach for on the deepest days, the Volkl 3 is going to make those days even better.
