For the weight conscience Ski Mountaineer, it doesn’t get much better than the Ski Trab Magico.
The day I toured with the Magico we had warm spring conditions, giving us snow conditions that ranged from soft corn to slush. The first thing I noticed was how incredibly lightweight the skis are, it felt like I didn’t have anything locked to my tech bindings at all. These things weigh in at just over two pounds each, a feat made possible by Ski Trabs use of the most high-tech materials available. Overall, I was really impressed with how easy it is to skin uphill with these skis.
On the descent, I liked how the Skis responsiveness matched up with the turn shape for a very predictable feel, which is exactly what you need in technical no-fall zones. The stiffness kept me reasonably stable at speed, and these felt a lot less tinny than a lot of the ultra-light touring skis I’ve tried.
The camber’s sweet spot is set back from center a little, which did feel a little strange, but I could see it being beneficial with a few inches of fresh snow- especially when you consider the tip rocker.
The Magico is 116mm in the tip, 83 underfoot, and 104 in the tail. It has traditional camber underfoot with a bit of tip rocker, features an ultra-lightweight aramid honeycomb core, and has the Attivo shock absorber technology that allows the ski to adapt to terrain without losing contact with the snow.
If you’re a ski mountaineer who needs ultra-light performance for technical ascents, but who still wants to be able to make some good turns on the way back down, I’d check out the Ski Trab Magico.
