The Dynafit Denali is a ski mountaineering/freeride hybrid that is geared a little more towards the touring side of things.
The day I toured with the Denali we had fresh snow from a late spring storm. It was super soft in the morning but by afternoon it got a bit heavy. Everything about the design is intended to shave weight for energy savings during the tour. At just under three pounds each, I could hardly notice the skis on the way up, and the short tails make kick a turns a cinch- which is great in sketchy terrain. They also have a short radius at the binding for maximum edge hold on icy terrain—another great feature to have for ski mountaineering.
The Denali is 131 mm in the tip, 98 mm underfoot, and 116 in the tail. The shape gives the skis a lot of sidecut, so on the descent they are more suited to a traditional backcountry turn where you follow the fall line. While they didn’t feel the best for big surfy turns in open terrain, they did float well thanks to the Scoop rocker tip. They were also very nimble and quick, and that’s something you need in tight situations- whether that’s a bony couloir or a tree line.
If you like to travel deep in the backcountry and enjoy the adventure of getting up every bit as much as the ride back down, the Dynafit Denali is just the ski you’ve been looking for.
