Some mountains are higher than others, but for truly high status a mountain must be symbolic — like Falketind. This towering giant (2,067 m) in the western Jotunheimen range is Norway’s most beautiful peak, according to the poet Aasmund Olafsson Vinje. It looks inaccessible, surrounded as it is by fall-away cliffs and deep glacial crevasses. Boeck, Keilhau and Urdi must have possessed incredible tenacity to find a way to the top back in 1820.
